Sorry for the lack of content in the last two days, but our internet access has been down here and is still not up at this point. I managed to find a weak wireless signal to connect through for this post, but we are not out of the woods on the internet access by a long shot.
The last 48 have not been particularly comfortable but not anything to complain about in comparison to the people who live here 365 I am sure. We spent the morning working on the kids schoolwork, and then made our way to El Jordan for the afternoon. We got to El Jordan and the kids set about helping to bake cookies with another volunteer here while Melody and I worked on packing Christmas hampers that will be given away to families. About a half hour after we started, the power grid went down for the city, so we were working in the dark or by cell phone flashlight for about 3 hours. This made the cookie baking a little more difficult because although they have gas ovens, the thermostat for the ovens is of course electric.
The kids just kept making batter and then put it in the refrigerator to bake when the power came back on. Melody and I managed to pack the dry pasta, sugar, oil, molasses and rice into the hampers and then we moved on to wrapping some basic presents outside where we could see a little better. Thus far today, it has been more of the same work, but tomorrow we will be starting at 8am and going fairly late as from what we can translate, there is a lot to do tomorrow.
The weather down here has been unseasonably dry and hot since we got here. We have been averaging about 36.5 degrees and have not had any rain as of yet. That is a bit unusual given that it is rainy season. We should be hovering around 30 and getting rain every day or two but its just been hot hot and more hot.
After work today, we have lined up a soccer game for Jordan to play in with a bunch of other girls just behind where we are staying. Should be interesting to see if she can hang with some South American girls.
One last funny item. We went to a "high end" coffee shop yesterday evening and they had the following sign on the wall for us gringos. I made sure to keep an eye on my stuff. I was afraid my camera might go rogue and bite me or something.
